Types of Thailand Visas

Thailand offers various visa categories designed for different purposes of stay — from short tourist visits to long-term residence and investment. Below is a detailed overview:

 

1. Visa Exemption & Visa on Arrival (VOA)

  • Visa Exemption: As of 2024, nationals of 93 countries can enter Thailand without a visa and stay up to 30–60 days, depending on nationality.
  • Visa on Arrival (VOA): Since 2024, nationals of 31 countries can obtain a visa upon arrival at the airport or land border for tourism purposes, valid for 15 days.
  • Ideal for short visits, tourism, or business meetings.

2. Tourist Visa (TR Visa)

  • Single-Entry Tourist Visa (SETV): Valid for 60 days, extendable for another 30 days inside Thailand.
  • Multiple-Entry Tourist Visa (METV): Valid for 6 months, allows multiple entries with stays up to 60 days each.
  • Best for travelers who want more time to explore Thailand beyond visa exemption.

3. Non-Immigrant Visas

These visas serve specific purposes for longer stays:

a) Non-Immigrant B Visa (Business Visa)

    • For employment, business activities, or starting a company.
    • May be issued as single-entry (90 days) or multiple-entry (1 year).
    • Work Permit required for employment.

b) Non-Immigrant O Visa

    • For those married to a Thai citizen, dependents of foreigners working in Thailand, or for volunteering.
    • Can be extended to 1 year inside Thailand.

c) Non-Immigrant O-A (Long-Stay Retirement Visa)

    • For foreigners aged 50 years and over who wish to stay in Thailand without the intention of working. 
    • Valid for 1 year, renewable annually.
    • Requires proof of funds or pension and health insurance.

d) Non-Immigrant O-X (10-Year Retirement Visa)

    • For retirees aged 50 years and over from selected countries.
    • Valid for 5 years upon entry, renewable for another 5 years (total 10 years).
    • Requires higher financial criteria (money deposited in a Thai bank located in Thailand) and comprehensive health insurance.
    • Benefits of Non-O-X visa holders
      1. Can work as a volunteer (in accordance with the list of volunteer work as stipulated by the Department of Employment).
      2. Can purchase a vehicle (under the provision of laws on motor vehicles).
      3. Can purchase a condominium (proceed in accordance with the Condominium Act).

e) Non-Immigrant ED Visa (Education Visa)

    • Valid for 90 days, extendable to 1 year.

f) Non-Immigrant M Visa (Media Visa)

    • For foreign journalists, reporters, or film crew officially recognized by Thai authorities.
    • Perfect for long-term stays linked to family, study, work, or retirement.

4. Long-Term Resident Visa (LTR Visa)

  • Designed for wealthy global citizens, retirees, highly skilled professionals, and investors.
  • Valid for 10 years (multiple entry).
  • Benefits include reduced immigration reporting, eligibility for fast-track services, and simplified work permits.
  • Tailored for high-net-worth individuals and professionals seeking long-term stability.

5. Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)

  • A new visa for digital nomads, freelancers, and remote workers. Dependents (spouse, children) can join.
  • Valid for 5 years with multiple entries.
  • Allows 180-day stays per entry, renewable without re-entry permits.
  • Ideal for remote workers and those wanting flexibility in Thailand.

6. SMART Visa

  • Special visa for professionals, investors, executives, and startups in targeted industries (technology, innovation, STEM).
  • Valid for up to 4 years.
  • Holders are exempt from work permit requirements.
  • Perfect for entrepreneurs and skilled professionals in innovative industries.

7. Thailand Elite / Privilege Visa

  • Long-term visa under the Thailand Privilege Program.
  • Packages range from 5 to 20 years.

  • Best for those who want hassle-free, long-term residency with premium benefits.

8. Permanent Residency (PR)

  • Available to foreigners who have lived in Thailand for at least 3 consecutive years on a Non-Immigrant Visa.

9. Other Specialized Visas

  • Transit Visa: For travelers passing through Thailand en route to another country (valid 30 days).
